Export

Exporting a Classic Car from Germany to the UK

Post-Brexit the route is straightforward, but the import entry, duty relief for older cars and DVLA registration all need preparation.

The crossing

Most vehicles travel by enclosed truck via a Channel crossing, which keeps the car covered and the timeline predictable — typically a few days from Kiel.

Import entry and duty

A customs entry is made on arrival. Vehicles of collector interest can attract reduced treatment, but the classification must be supported by documentation and confirmed by your customs agent.

Registration with the DVLA

Registration requires proof of import, the German documents, an insurance certificate and, depending on age, a roadworthiness test. Keep the original German papers — they are provenance.
